My New Pittsburgh Obsession: Burgatory Bar
I live in Fox Chapel, which isn’t exactly known as the hub of Pittsbrugh dining. In the past few years, the area has seen the arrival of a few new eateries – but none has even come close to its newest.
Burgatory Bar opened in January. Located at the Waterworks strip mall, it took the place previously occupied by Sichaun House. The place is heavy on concept: it takes its pun-filled moniker very seriously, and jokes about “purgatory” abound.
But in burger-obsessed mind, the only thing about this place that’s even vaguely hellish about this place is that way you feel after walking out: like you’re going to have to run a marathon to work off half the calories.
The burgers draw the crowd, but the milkshakes are what keeps everyone hooked. Shakes are one hundred percent original and made with great care. Homemade ice cream mingles with creative ingredients: one shake blends cereal in to the shake, another includes chunks of chocolate doughnuts. Perhaps the most adventurous on the menu features apple pancakes alongside bacon – and if all that wasn’t enough, it also happens to be one of the menu’s alcoholic shakes.
The food is great as well. I’ve tried the build your own option, which was great, though not quite as good as the Morty’s Steakhouse burger, which is loaded down with horseradish cheddar, fried onions, and cabernet sauce.
Burgatory embodies the casual, laid-back vibe that makes a burger taste that much better, but be prepared to wait: a table here isn’t easy to come by, but trust me when I say its worth the wait, the drive, and the outrageous calorie count.
