It’s hard to truly describe what music does for the heart and soul. Music is a universal language that can heal us through heartbreak, guide us on roadtrips and make a bad day better, and can get a party started. We’re teaming up with Backstage Guitars to take a closer look at some of Pittsburgh’s musical talent and bringing you the best of our local music scene.
To kickoff our Backstage Q&A we interviewed The Duration Band, who plays a show tonight Saturday, July 6th at Mullen’s Bar and Grill. Check them out!
-How would you describe your band?
The Duration Band is a group of local Pittsburgh musicians, who are steadily rising, performing at a number of clubs, cafe’s and venues around town. We play the type of music that has stood the test of time – it’s been around, it’s still around and we plan on being around, that’s why we are called The Duration.
-What is the meaning of your band or groups name?
Duration – du̇-ˈrā-shən: Definition of DURATION continuance in time or the time during which something exists or lasts.
-When did the band first form?
The Duration formed in 2012 and has been steadily increasing in popularity and gaining a fan base across generational and racial lines.

-Do you have any pre-show rituals? If so, what are they? When did you start that & why?
Not that it’s a ritual but, we are known to pray just before any live performance, asking for guidance, perfection and a good time, and that the show goes over well. We began doing this at our very first live Performance and so far will continue this keeps us focused and helps as a motivator while on stage. When did you start that & why?

-Who is the most confident/nervous before heading out on stage?
I think the as a whole (Every member is as confident as the next, we all look forward to bringing our best performance at each and every show, but if I had to say who is pumped the most I could probably say (Spencer) one of our guitarist, with me being the most nervous one in the unit because I want the show to run smooth without any interruptions.
-We’re gear nerds. What’s your overall favorite piece of equipment you use in the band? Why?
If Charles were the only one responding, he would say his favorite piece of equipment is the sweet Custom Fender Jazz Bass he uses named “Pearl”. The Duration as a whole is fond of Yamaha, Fender and Alesis equipment. We also favor Yorkville and SWR, along with Eden.
