What I Would Wear To The Oscars If by some miracle I had a coveted invite to the 2011 Oscars (and an unlimited income), I’d be having the time of my life right now choosing my gown for the big night. Half of the fun of Oscar night is scoping out the amazing dresses the women wear. In fact, I’ve spent way too much time musing over what Hollywood’s most fabulous choose to wear – I’ve even come up with my own system of categorizing the dresses:
The classic dress. Usually spotted on stars like Angelina Jolie (and anyone else who is likely to win “Best Actress”), these dresses are simple, understated, and absolutely foolproof. The dress is usually black , tough sometimes a truly stellar dress in a jewel tone can fall under this category. It’s got to be long. It’s got be fabulous. It’s got to be Oscar de la Renta. My personal pick? Oscar’s black floor-length gown. I love the contrast between the fitted bodice and full skirt, and the subtle sequin detail keeps it for looking too classic (read: boring.)
The princess dress: These dresses are usually pastel in color, full on the skirt, and supremely girly. The dresses usually feature plenty of tulle and lots of sparkle – think Miley Cyrus’ 2009 gown (by far her best look to date) I looked to Zuhair Murad, the genius behind Miley’s look for inspiration because nobody does a princess dress better. My pick was this beige number – it has capture that whimsical, old-world charm even better than a Taylor Swift song does.
The edgy dress: A dress that’s so fabulous, it’s allowed to break a few rules. Whether it’s a short dress among floor-sweeping gowns or an “off-limits” color, this dress goes against the grain. Herve Leger makes some of the most flattering dresses in the world – this silver, structured mini is also one of the most interesting. The dress that no one understands: It’s a fashion faux pas along the lines of Bjork’s swan dress. I didn’t have a pick for this category because…well, my taste is too good for that.
