Maniac Mutt Birthday: Homemade Birthday Cake for Dogs
Ahh they grow up so fast. It might sound cliché, but it truly feels like yesterday when I decided to get the puppy who stole my heart with just one look. Now after one hernia surgery, a 2-week boot camp, 3 different puppy “graduations”, and countless cuddles later, I can’t believe we’re celebrating Oliver’s third birthday already.
Each year we capture the birthday excitement with photos and videos of Ollie with his bday hat and treats, but this year I wanted to take it up a notch. Instead of splurging on a bone-shaped, frosting-covered cookie, I decided to make Oliver his own homemade birthday cake.
This sounds ridiculous, but I was actually nervous. I wasn’t cooking for the President of the United States, I was baking for my stubborn, spoiled Boston Terrier. But there’s a happy ending to this story, because he couldn’t get enough. Follow the recipe below from allrecipes.com, for a peanut butter birthday cake for dogs that will have their tails wagging.
Ingredients
-
1 egg
-
1/4 cup peanut butter
-
1/4 cup cooking oil
-
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-
1/3 cup honey (optional)
-
1 cup shredded carrots
-
1 cup whole wheat or white flour
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 6 cup ring mold.
- Combine the egg, peanut butter, oil, vanilla, and honey, if desired, in a large bowl; blend well. Stir in the carrots and mix thoroughly. Sift together the flour and baking soda and fold into the carrot mixture. Spoon cake batter into prepared pan.
- Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes. Let cake cool in pan for 10 minutes; then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Enjoy watching them devour and beg for more.
