Life without a bra may seem free and liberating at first, but what happens when your favorite dress doesn’t fit and look the way you want it to? Back in 1910, a corset was your only option to keep the girls in place. These corsets were beyond uncomfortable and often distracted from how the dress should fit. One day when prepping for a party, NYC socialite Mary Phelps-Jacob decided that she would no longer be a slave to the corset. She and her maid created the first modern-day bra by sewing two pieces of fabric together and adding some ribbon. They received a patent in 1914 and changed the lives of women all over the world.
I’ll be honest, I really wasn’t ready for a relationship when I met you. Things were changing, and I just wanted to be left alone. You were pink and–fine, I’ll say it–I hated you. But you persisted, and it was inevitable that we would end up together. You’ve always been there for me and have always been able to adapt to my bizarre fashion choices. Heck, you were even able to pull through for me when I went through the backless-top phase. If that’s not dedication, then I don’t know what is. Happy birthday, my dearest bra!
