Looking through the gallery of artist Willard Wigan, something may seem a bit off. Eye-catching sculptures of dancing figures and brightly colored objects will delight the eye, but why are giant needle hoops framing each object? Then it hits you. Wigan is not your normal sculptor – he is a micro sculptor that makes objects so tiny that they can fit on a pinhead.
Only visible through a microscope, each work of art is made out of a single grain of sugar or piece of dust. Wigan often works at night, to reduce the chance of vibrations from passing traffic outside. He is even able to slow down his breathing and work in between heartbeats in order to get the precision needed to create his miniature forms. Considering the physical demands to create his work, there is no telling how long he will be able to continue micro-sculpting. But Wigan has already shown the world how to push boundaries beyond what was believed possible.
