When I think of “salt of the earth”, venison, crème fraiche, and escargots aren’t exactly the first things that come to mind. Luckily, the new Bloomfield eatery offers up all of these gourmet delicacies – despite the feel of simplicity that it’s name conveys.
Salt Of The Earth (more commonly referred to as simply “Salt”) opened in September to rave reviews. The modern American gastro pub features an extensive menu, complete with pork loin, duck breast, and venison served rare. Carnivores can certainly find something to choose from, but vegetarians won’t be disappointed either: entrees featuring tempeh, tofu, and eggplant earn highest praise, and some dishes can even be done with seitan instead of meat.
The owners take pride in their commitment to serving only organic food, though prepared in the most elaborate way imaginable. Menu items such as a shrimp starter served with green apple, chocolate, jalapeño, and citrus prove one thing: that this Penn Avenue gem is a place where authenticity meets elegance. Clearly, this is a place where the “salt of the earth” becomes interesting, innovative, and gourmet cuisine.
