Considering how socially conscious and successful Suma Chander is as a NY designer, it’s hard to believe she worked on Wall Street for 13 years. But that was the case before she decided to start her own fashion brand, Suma C. Collections.
Growing up in India, Suma was constantly around fabric, making her own clothes and working with natural textiles. Eventually she decided to go back to her roots to start her own fashion brand that combines her Indian heritage with western sportswear. She mixes fabrics, textures and colors of the East with the silhouettes and ease-of-wear of the West. The results are unique yet classic pieces that are meant to make women feel beautiful.
Lately, Chander has been getting a lot of praise for her use of natural textiles and repurposed fabrics found in her fashion lines. She often uses fabrics such as silk and wool, and encourages the upcycling of textiles, a process that takes recycled fabrics and transforms them into a higher quality product. Her line also plans to fund a humanitarian program for developing countries called the Pure Water Project. The project would help bring drinkable water to remote areas of the world.
