After being silent for more than two years, Fall Out Boy released their new album “Save Rock and Roll”, and announced a spring U.S. tour earlier this year, stunning fans and media. Their spring, post-hiatus tour kicked-off on May 13th in Madison, WI. and will continue on throughout June, followed by an arena tour later this fall with Panic! At The Disco and Twenty-One Pilots.
Pittsburgh was lucky enough to be a stop on this leg of the tour, and Fall Out Boy was set to play at Stage AE on May 21st. The show was originally set for inside, but with the influx of potential concert-goers, the venue changed the show to outside allowing for more than twice the amount of tickets to be sold.
I was lucky enough to buy tickets – within the first 15 minutes of them going on sale – as the Pittsburgh date was sold out within an hour. Eagerly awaiting the come-back concert, when Tuesday finally came along, I left for Pittsburgh more than 7 hours before the start of the concert to wait 5 hours in the hot, city sun.
When the doors finally opened at 7pm, I secured my spot in front of the center of the stage. NK was the opener band [sounding most like Rage Against The Machine and Cage The Elephant], and as soon as they began playing, the crowd went wild. Their debut album, “Nothing To Be Gained Here” was released that day, so their energy was unbelievable.
Finally at 9pm, Fall Out Boy began to play. By this point, the crowd was impatient, hot, and ready to dance – many had already been removed from the crowd after passing out. They opened with “Thriller”, and continued to play a mix of billboard-singles and fan favorites. Classics such as “Saturday”, “Grand Theft Autumn”, and “A Little Less Sixteen Candles…” were played, as well as new songs like, “Save Rock and Roll” and “The Phoenix”.
Overall, the crowd was incredibly receptive and you could hear the lyrics being shouted even outside of concert area. Hopefully this display of dedication will bring Fall Out Boy back before another 5 years pass!
