Beat the heat and enjoy what is sure to be really chill tunes at Stage AE this tomorrow, where Death Cab for Cutie will be performing!
I remember listening to them for the first time when I picked up their 2003 album, Transatlanticism, and becoming completely hooked to their unique sound. Since then, the band has changed a lot in their sound and direction, although they never lost the elements that make them who they are. Their newest album, Codes and Keys, came out last year, and it’s been in the disc drive of my car for a few months now as reliable road-trip music. Current favorite is “Monday Morning”, which has a really great, thrumming beat (from a synth or keyboard) throughout and lyrics that are pure Ben Gibbard: part amazing narrative, and part words that just sound good together.
Though the band has made significant changes to their style, you can feel throwbacks to their old sound in several of their newer songs. Hopefully the line up tomorrow night will be the same: a mix of new and old.
