It’s been a long, long winter, and unfortunately there are still days of winter ahead of us. Nothing is worse than hitting mid-winter and finding your face in rough shape from the freezing temps. We’re here to give you a few of our favorite tips to save your gorgeous face from the bitter cold!
TIP: This is tip is a definite game changer and my all-time favorite that has saved my skin this winter season. Most of us, as I always did, take a hot shower and hop out with our faces feeling taught and dry. My first move is always to reach for my face moisturizer and glob it on to “save my skin.” **sound the alarm** Instead of slabbing on the moisturizer right away, wait up to 30 minutes after showering to apply your moisturizer. The time you wait to moisturize allows the natural oils to return to your skin, which is necessary for moisture to resurface and let your skin return to it’s natural shine. I usually wait around 10-15 minutes after I shower and I have seen an incredible difference in my winter skin!
TIP: Switch moisturizers with the weather and with your skin type. The weather changes our natural skin type, so we have to change our moisturizers accordingly. For those with oily skin, look for a lighter, non-greasy moisturizer. We sometime like to believe that oily skin doesn’t need more moisture, but it does!! Dehydration in the winter makes skin even oilier, so in the winter make sure to use a light non-greasy lotion to revive your skin and to keep it hydrated! If you have dry skin you should look for a thick moisturizer with a barrier repair. Dry skin means flaky and cracked skin, so look for a moisturizer made with natural oils and also make sure it promises long-term hydration. We don’t want your skin drying out mid-day!
TIP: Use a moisturizer with SPF protection! Contrary to popular belief, you are still getting plenty of UVA and UVB burning ray in the wintertime! With the cool weather, and even cooler weather here in Pittsburgh, look to a moisturizer with a broad spectrum of SPF 15 or higher to keep your skin hydrated and protected from the rays. This will keep your skin looking bright now, and bright a few years down the road. Your skin will thank you!
TIP: Just because it’s negative wind chill doesn’t mean you should turn your shower into a steam room. We get it, it’s cold and all you want to do is either a) cuddle up underneath your covers and never leave or b) take a hot hour-long shower. Don’t pick choice b! Bathing your skin in hot water causes blood-vessel dilation of your skin, which means water loss which, means DRY, DRY skin. So try to steer clear of the steamy shower and stick to a lower temperature. We promise it’ll be worth it.
We hope this helps!
Long live your skin!
