Ok so… Don’t ask me how this got started, but apparently clunky, chunky lashes are hot for fall. What the…? As a makeup artist, you’ll typically find me meticulously combing through my clients’ lashes after a mascara application; clumpy mascara has long been a faux pas. But leave it to the fashion world to shake things up.
According to Pat McGrath, the world’s top high fashion editorial and runway makeup artist, spider lashes are a fresh new way to accentuate your eyes for evening. McGrath, who executed the look for numerous fall runway shows including Lanvin and Valentino, suggests approaching the application using a layer-by-layer technique.
Start with a base coat, using the wand to evenly distribute and separate lashes on top and bottom. For the next few coats, do not comb the wand through the lashes, but rather dab the mascara on thickly in a painterly manner. I would recommend at least three or four coats, if not five, to achieve full Twiggy-esque drama. Try a volumizing and lengthening formula such as L’Oreal Voluminous, Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes or Graftobian Professional. And please, don’t try this at the office unless you are prepared for your boss to wonder if you’re paying homage to Tammy Faye Baker. This is a look best reserved for nighttime.
