Since the release of every little girl’s favorite doll in 1959, Barbie has been known to switch up her look left and right. From astronauts to bikini-clad beach babes, pizza chefs to firefighters, Barbie dolls have seen it all. Last week, though, she got a makeover that was more of a makeunder from Mexican graphic designer Eddi Aguirre. He went ahead and stripped her of everything that makes a Barbie a Barbie–her famously perfect, made-up face.
Instead of a cool new hair extensions or colorful eyeshadow, Barbie is looking au naturale for the first time ever. Aguirre’s images of a very normal looking Barbie have gone viral since their release last week, most likely because Mattel fans everywhere are finally able to look behind the mirror and see what beauty’s most recognizable face looks like when she steps out of the spotlight and turns in for the night. It turns out, she’s pretty relatable. Maybe this new look will help squash some of the controversies that have plagued Barbie since her arrival, such as the notion that her face and figure promote unhealthy and unrealistic ideals of a woman’s body.
