This spring, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens takes center stage, presenting a unique spectacle where fashion and flora unite in a vibrant homage to the legacy of Billy Porter. “Flowers Meet Fashion: Inspired by Billy Porter” is a must-see event running from May 6 to June 25. This exhibition not only celebrates the flourishing local roots of the Tony, Grammy and Emmy award-winning artist but also the creativity that blooms from his alma maters, Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh CAPA High School.
The experience unfolds in a series of theatrical scenes, each echoing the transformative power of Porter’s career. The entrance sets the tone, with a breathtaking Pittsburgh-inspired gown taking the spotlight against a pink neon backdrop in the Welcome Center. The journey continues with elegant blue and green costumes from Porter’s memoir, “Unprotected,” gracing the Sunken Garden under a cascade of gleaming globe chandeliers.
In the Victoria Room, a captivating gold costume hovers like a suspended dream over blue water lilies, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. Fans of Porter’s Broadway show, “Kinky Boots,” will revel in the Broderie Room, featuring a vibrant display of garments inspired by the award-winning musical.
However, the exhibition goes beyond traditional fashion norms. A standout piece is the aquaponics dress, a fusion of fashion, technology, and nature, where live fish swim within the garment, creating a living, moving spectacle. The top portion of this unique piece is a clear fish tank, while the bottom portion is rooted with live plants.
The South Conservatory brings the allure of Hollywood with a red carpet showcasing three award-worthy dresses constructed with dried plant material. As you leave, strike a pose in front of the pink and green vertical wall, a final flourish to a truly extraordinary experience.
The show is a testament to the creativity of Associate Director of Exhibits Jordyn Melino and designers Madison Michalko, Thee Suburbia, Cathy Olivar, Daniele Mathews, Damian Dominguez, Mindy Eshelman, and the students of Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh CAPA High School.
“Flowers Meet Fashion: Inspired by Billy Porter” is a celebration of Porter’s career, a love letter to his hometown, and a testament to the unyielding power of imagination where the worlds of fashion, horticulture, and performing arts meet.
