This Valentines day, why settle for a single night of decadence and delight when you can get out of dodge for a sinfully passionate getaway? At least for this girl, there’s no question what I’d prefer (hint hint boys). But where to go? There’s the classic romantic hotspots: Paris, Venice, Paris, Rome, New York, and that French city with the baguettes and the crepes and that big tower….oh right, Paris. But these suggestions leave me with a feeling of heart-stopping, how you say, ennui. So if, like me, you and your significant other prefer waterfalls to carriage rides, adrenaline to chocolates (wait, that’s a hard one…) or maybe you’re just looking for a little adventure in your love life, here are some off-the-Parisian-track romantic getaways that will have you cozying up, taking it off, gazing longingly into the stars and falling in love all over again…if not with each other, then definitely with these five unexpected, stunningly romantic cities.
If you’re looking to feel star-struck, look no further than Iceland’s capital. The Northern Lights are just a stunningly scenic two-hour drive through Iceland’s volcanic wilderness to the Snaelfellsnes Peninsula (say that three times fast…or even once). And when you’re not snuggling up under the stars, Reykjavik’s super hot nightlife, picturesque coastal trails, and geothermal heating pools will definitely leave any couple feeling starry eyed.
Think this notorious city in the Netherlands is all sin and games? You’re half right. Within the glow of the red-light district are unbelievably charming row houses bordering meandering canals and cobblestone roads busy with cyclists biking to one of the many charismatic cafes. Visit the Van Gogh museum or the Albert Cuypmarkt market before hitting the more ‘exciting’ attractions at night.
Looking for something a bit more secluded? Cozy up in front of the fire in the heart of England in one of the hundreds of adorable cabins that inspired the Shire from Lord of the Ring’s. Take a romantic walk through the snowy English countryside and stop off in the many fairytale-like vintage villages that dot the hillsides. And don’t forget to warm up with a spot of tea for two!
Separated into two cities on either side of the Danube, whether you prefer the ancient Buda or the younger, hipper Pest this city’s skyline is breathtaking from either side of the river. Take in a show at the elegant, historic Opera House and afterward take a stroll down Andrássy Avenue, a boulevard overflowing with beautiful boutiques and charismatic restaurants. And don’t forget to bring your bathing suit because the Thermal Baths in the “City of Spas” are certain to heat up any couple’s vacation.
The southern-carribean clash of cultures in this historic city is simply enchanting. So, take a carriage ride through the French Quarter or share a to-die-for dinner of traditional Creole cuisine. Hit a night on the town at the Bourbon Street Bars and indulge in some sultry New Orleans jazz to set the mood. But most importantly: relax. They don’t call it the Big Easy for nothing.
